Three Lawyers Are Charged in Major Insurance Scheme

Three attorneys were among 36 people charged Wednesday in a scheme to defraud insurers of more than $279 million through abuse of New York state’s no-fault auto insurance law. Also charged were 10 doctors who prosecutors said “essentially peddle their medical licenses like a corner fraudster might sell fake IDs.”

DOJ Prosecutor Challenges Release Of Ted Stevens Misconduct Report

Mattel attacks $310 million Bratz copyright award on appeal

Mattel has asked the 9th Circuit to reverse the $310 million judgment against it in a long-running legal battle over the Bratz dolls, maintaining that its failed infringement allegations didn’t justify “the largest copyright fee award in history.”

The recession, with its double whammy of retirement investment portfolio declines and slowdowns in law firm revenue, was a wake-up call for firms that fund pensions out of current income, as well as for the broader swath of firms that fund benefits out of firm-run investment portfolios. And the problems created by the sagging economy brought into relief a bigger, looming issue: The ranks of retired partners are swelling just as the number of equity partners — who are ultimately responsible for funding the pension plans — is leveling off.

Cigarette Warnings Violate 1st Amendment, Federal Judge Rules

The Food and Drug Administration’s new cigarette warnings took another hit on Wednesday. Federal District Judge Richard Leon has again sided with the tobacco companies, finding that the warnings violate the industry’s free speech rights.
